Pride in our Union member: Larry Goldey

Larry Goldey truly lives by the adage “I am my brother’s keeper”. He thrives as a union steward at the Nicholasville, KY Kroger #714, a UFCW 227 executive board member, and he is the Chaplin at the Jessamine County Detention Center. Larry purposefully carries that message out standing up for his fellow members in his union and by helping individuals who are incarcerated.

Larry has been working in the chapel of the detention center since 1989 and has been the Chaplin since 1994. As Chaplin Larry oversees church services, and coordinates the Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous programs. He is there every day for people to talk to as they fight for sobriety or to just talk to about their lives- hopes, concerns, and plans for the future.

If you ask Larry if it’s ever too much, or if the hours are too long, or if it gets too difficult to be the person so many rely on- he’ll give you this honest response. “Yes, but almost any time I’ve been at that point, where it’s too much or I don’t feel like I’m making a difference someone walks up to me at the store, or at the center and tells me how much I’ve helped them”. Larry said he remembers one time a young man walked up to him and said “You saved my life, and because of you I’m the first person in my family to go to college- thank you”.

UFCW Local 227 is proud to have Larry as a member and hope to always have him on our corner when times get tough.
