President Bob Blair: I am Disappointed by Kroger's Decision

May 15, 2020

Dear Union Family,

As you know, I have been asking for Kroger to continue the emergency pay of $2/hr for as long as you are on the frontlines. Last week, Kroger announced that hero pay will end tomorrow. We strongly disagree with that decision.

I sent a letter to Kroger's CEO demanding an extension of the $2/hr emergency pay increase. UFCW local union President's in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan stood together in solidarity. Our letter even got the attention of local news media: Kroger ending 'hero' bonuses is 'demoralizing' for workers, Louisville union says. We have had several phone conferences and many arguments with Kroger demanding they extend the hero pay.

Today, Kroger announced an extra bonus of $400 for full-time employees and $200 for part-time employees and to extend its emergency sick pay policy. This is not what we wanted, nor is it what you deserve. I am incredibly disappointed with Kroger's decision. The coronavirus still threatens your health and safety, and I want to assure you that your union will continue to fight with everything we've got for you.

We will continue to update you on our efforts to support you. We have been hearing from you about your concerns throughout this crisis and continue to address them with Kroger. You are not alone.

Thank you for all of your hard work.

In Solidarity,
Bob Blair
President
