Workers Deserve a Safe Workplace

Last December we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Congress enacting the Occupational Safety and Health Act. While this act is estimated to have saved more than 618,000 lives, the anniversary is a good time to take a look at what more OSHA could be doing to better protect workers. We all deserve to be safe at work and expect to return to our families at the end of our shift, yet for an estimated 5,250 Americans that was not the case in 2018. That number climbs when workers who die from occupational diseases, estimated to be 95,000 each year, are counted.

2020 was a year that was especially concerning for workers, and while essential workers were in increasingly dangerous workplaces OSHA inspections were half of what they were in 2019. With half the inspections on the books 2020 was an all time low for OSHA inspections, which does not match the real danger that was felt for Americans while working during a global pandemic.

The political landscape for pro-worker legislation has changed and there is a real chance we can get some much needed changes to policies to help create a safer workplace for all Americans.  We join others in the call to increase inspections that lead to life saving changes in our workplace as well as strengthening the guidelines we have in place to ramp up workplace safety.
