Demetrio Zourarauis: #MemberMonday
Demetrio Zourarauis has been an UFCW member continuously since he was hired by the Kroger Company in January of 1998.
Demetrio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Greek immigrants. After studying at the University of Buenos Aires, he traveled to the U.S. in 1985 to pursue higher studies at Iowa State University and the University of Kentucky. Following his marriage, he became a naturalized citizen on October 21, 1994.
Growing up, he spoke Greek at home, but Spanish is his native tongue; during elementary and secondary school, he also studied English and French as second languages. Thus, while almost exclusively bi-lingual (English and Spanish), he can still communicate somewhat proficiently in Greek.
Demetrio worked for the Commonwealth of Kentucky for almost 30 years. First as a soil conservation scientist and later as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist. After his retirement, however, he continued his professional career as a GIS and remote sensing analyst, working as a contractor to the federal government in support of agency programs. He also assists with education and research activities at Kentucky State University. Demetrio is currently an adjunct faculty at the University of Kentucky.
Demetrio makes his home in Versailles, Kentucky and has one grown-up son.
