Angie Hilen, the daughter of two UFCW 227 members John and Dorthy Hilen of Lexington, received the award for the 2017-2018 school year and said, “Receiving these scholarships has taken a tremendous financial burden from my family and relieves some stress of paying back huge loans after graduation.“

Every year the UFCW International Scholarships are offered to union members or their immediate family who want to further their education and demonstrate a commitment to their communities and to UFCW values. These scholarships are also valued at $2000 each. Access to this application can also be found on the UFCW 227 website at the link below.

Veronica Palmer, the daughter of UFCW 227 member Janie Palmer, states that with the current program she is participating in it doesn’t allow her a chance to work to help pay for college. “The scholarship that UFCW Local 227 awarded me will help to alleviate some of those costs.”

For the past 20 years, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has distributed over 3.4 million scholarship dollars to union members and their families. Amounts range from $500 to $4,000. These one-time cash awards can be used toward classes beginning in the Fall of 2019. The students selected for university, college, trade or technical school scholarships represent a wide sampling of backgrounds, union affiliations, goals and accomplishments. The selection process is very competitive since they receive over 5,000 applications each year.
