Union Meetings: Why should you attend?

updated 7/8/24

How many times have you seen that our union is having an important meeting? Maybe you saw a flier or got a text message from your union rep. Either way you made a mental note to try to attend but life threw a curveball and you missed it. So what exactly did you miss? In our quarterly meetings we share information like member only benefits, upcoming events and make plans. This process of sharing information, and taking action is what transforms us from individual workers into a union. The best reason to attend a meeting is for you to see that you are a part of something that is more powerful when you are involved and knowledgeable. Making connections between the issues discussed at the meeting and something your co-worker cares about is what you need to see and hear so you can share it. Union meetings are the heart of where members learn about the issues facing their membership and what is going on to build solidarity.

So what happens when you don’t attend? Issues continue to be debated and decisions are still made but your point of view is not represented which could have caused a different outcome. You might miss out on an event that you would have liked to attend or a scholarship you could have applied for. The more you know the more valuable you are to your fellow union members.
